Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

Glaucoma is an eye condition characterised by gradual damage to the optic nerve usually caused by fluid buildup in the front part of your eye. Left untreated, glaucoma can lead to vision loss or blindness. At AKUH, we are committed to providing advanced, minimally invasive treatments for glaucoma, including Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT).

SLT is a safe and highly effective laser procedure that helps lower the fluid pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure or IOP), a key risk factor for glaucoma progression. It works by stimulating the eye's natural drainage system to function more effectively, reducing the need for eye drops in some cases.

Conditions We Treat

SLT is primarily used to treat open-angle glaucoma, the most common form of the disease but is also used for different types of glaucoma and related conditions:

  • Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG): The most prevalent type, characterised by gradual damage to the optic nerve.
  • Ocular hypertension: Elevated IOP without detectable optic nerve damage. SLT can be used to prevent the development of glaucoma in these cases.
  • Normal-tension glaucoma: Optic nerve damage despite having normal IOP readings. SLT may still be beneficial in lowering IOP further.
  • Pseudoexfoliation glaucoma: A secondary form of open-angle glaucoma associated with the buildup of flaky material in the eye.
  • Pigmentary glaucoma: Another secondary form caused by the dispersion of pigment granules that clog the drainage system.

Our Services

We offer comprehensive SLT services to meet your needs, including:

  • Comprehensive eye examination: Before SLT, a thorough eye exam is performed to assess your overall eye health and determine if you are a suitable candidate. This includes measuring your IOP, examining your optic nerve, and performing visual field testing.
  • SLT procedure: The SLT procedure is performed in our outpatient clinic and typically takes only a few minutes. Numbing eye drops are administered before the procedure, and a special lens is placed on your eye. The laser is then applied to the drainage angle of the eye. The procedure is generally painless.
  • Post-SLT care: After the procedure, you will be given eye drops to use for a short period. You will also have follow-up appointments to monitor your IOP and assess the effectiveness of the treatment.
  • Personalised treatment plans: Our team develops individualised treatment plans based on your specific needs and the severity of your glaucoma. We consider factors such as your age, overall health, and lifestyle.
