Splenic Pathology Programme

The spleen is a vital organ in the abdomen that plays a crucial role in your immune system. It filters blood, removes old red blood cells, and helps fight infections. The AKUH Splenic Pathology Programme is dedicated to providing comprehensive care for a wide range of splenic conditions.

Conditions We Treat

  • Enlarged spleen (splenomegaly): This can be caused by infections, blood disorders, or liver diseases.
  • Splenic cysts and tumours: These can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
  • Splenic rupture: A tear in the spleen, often caused by trauma or injury.
  • Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP): An autoimmune disorder that affects the spleen and causes low platelet count.
  • Hereditary spherocytosis: A genetic condition that affects the shape of red blood cells.

Our Services

We offer a full spectrum of diagnostic and treatment services for splenic disorders, including:

  • Advanced diagnostic tests: Blood tests, imaging studies (ultrasound, CT scan, MRI), and spleen biopsies.
  • Minimally invasive procedures: Splenic embolization to block blood flow to the spleen and laparoscopic splenectomy (surgery to remove the spleen through small incisions).
  • Open splenectomy (traditional surgery): When minimally invasive techniques are not suitable.
  • Post-operative care: Our team provides comprehensive support to ensure a smooth recovery.
