Electroencephalography (EEG) is a painless procedure.  It is a technique used to record the electrical activity of the brain to help localise lesions, make a diagnosis and in the management of epilepsy and other neurological dysfunctions. The types of EEGs offered include Routine EEG, Video EEG -Long Term Monitoring with Video, Long EEG (for admitted patients only) and Sleep Deprived EEG.

  • Please wash your hair and do not use hair spray, creams or oils on the day of the test

  • Please continue to take the medication as recommended by your doctor

  • Children must be in a sleep state for this test to be performed.  For children over 3 years, it is important to bring them for the test at a time when the child can take a nap and go to sleep during the recording.  You may bring their favourite music or video if that you think that will help.

  • For babies and infants, please remember to bring feeding bottles (filled), soothers and other items necessary that will help keep your child calm.

The procedure involves applying small button-like electrodes on the head using a special cream (that washes out easily).  Then, you will be asked to lie on the bed and relax closing your eyes.  We are able to get more information and a better recording if you are able to fall asleep during the test.
