Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OBGYN) at the Aga Khan University Hospital provides high-quality, compassionate, evidence-based care to women seeking guidance, counselling and treatment related to pregnancy, reproductive and gynaecological health.
A team of internationally trained consultants, obstetricians and gynaecologists, specialized nurses and midwives are equipped to diagnose, treat and manage a variety of women's health-related conditions and diseases. We offer comprehensive Obstetric and Gynaecology services which include preconception, antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care for both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies, treatment of general gynaecologic problems such as menstrual disorders (irregular cycle, period pains, abnormal vaginal bleeding), pelvic pain, vaginal itching, vaginal and discharge and family planning services.
The OBGYN consultants and nurses are further trained in subspecialties like gynaecological cancers (cervical, uterine, ovarian, vaginal and vulval), reproductive health issues including infertility, miscarriages, menopausal transition, and health conditions related to young and adolescent girls. We also offer minimally invasive and advanced laparoscopic surgical procedures. A first-of-its-kind Office Hysteroscopy service is also available for time and cost-effective treatment.
These services can be accessed through consultation clinics, daycare surgery and inpatient care. A 24/7 emergency service is available to cater to women suffering from acute obstetric or gynaecology issues. A five-bedded special care unit to exclusively monitor complex obstetric and gynaecology cases is also available for patients. A state-of-the-art Labor and Delivery suite, Well Baby Nursery and fully equipped Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are located near the ward area to support the bonding of new mothers and their babies, and provide around-the-clock care for high-risk and prematurely delivered babies.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology also offers support for parents and caregivers to provide optimal care and well-being opportunities for their young children. This continuous and involved parenting support is available from before birth and continues until the child is eight years of age. Considering its vital importance, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology has also initiated the Early Childhood Development, Parenting Readiness Education Programme (ECD PREP) which offers a wide range of services on Parenting Education and Responsive Caregiving by integrating education, research and services.
In addition to the above-mentioned services, a first-of-its-kind Lactation Clinic at AKUH provides and empowers mothers across Pakistan to ensure their infants' good health from the day they are born. The clinic serves mothers through both in-person and teleconsultations. Women who require additional support to breastfeed their newborns can benefit from this service.
The Aga Khan University Hospital has multiple specialities under one roof, which enables the team of obstetricians, gynaecologists and specialised nurses to work closely with physicians from other disciplines where multi-disciplinary decisions and management of complex diseases are required with the goal to ensure the provision of customized and holistic treatment for woman's health care needs. The results ensure safe births and enhanced overall quality of life for women.
