Paediatric Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy
Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) is a specialised dialysis treatment that continuously removes waste products and extra fluid from a child's blood when their kidneys are no longer working properly. Unlike traditional dialysis, which takes place in short sessions several times a week, CRRT is a non-stop 24-hour dialysis therapy.
Conditions We Treat
CRRT is typically used for critically ill children who experience Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) and cannot tolerate traditional dialysis. AKI can be caused by various conditions, including:
- Severe infection
- Dehydration
- Autoimmune diseases
How CRRT Works
- A thin tube (catheter) is placed in a large vein. Blood is slowly drawn out of the body through this catheter.
- The blood passes through a special filter that removes waste products and extra fluid.
- The cleaned blood is then returned to the child's body through another catheter.
Benefits of CRRT for Children
- Continuously removes waste and fluid, unlike traditional dialysis.
- More gentle on a child's body compared to traditional dialysis.
- Helps maintain a safe balance of electrolytes (salts) in the blood.
