Paediatric Peritoneal Dialysis

When a child's kidneys are no longer working properly, peritoneal dialysis (PD) can help remove waste and excess fluid from their body. Unlike traditional dialysis, which uses a machine, PD uses the lining of the child's abdomen (peritoneum) as a natural filter. At AKUH, we understand the complexities of caring for a child with this condition. Our dedicated team provides specialised treatment and support to ensure your child receives the best possible care.

Conditions We Treat

  • Chronic kidney disease
  • End-stage renal disease
  • Acute renal failure

How PD Works

  • A thin tube (catheter) is placed in your child's belly.
  • Sterile fluid (dialysis solution) flows through the catheter into the belly cavity.
  • Waste products and extra fluid pass from the blood into the dialysis solution.
  • The used solution is drained out, carrying away waste.

Benefits of PD for Children

  • More flexible treatment schedule compared to traditional dialysis.
  • Can be performed at home, allowing for greater normalcy in a child's life.
  • May be more comfortable for some children.
