World Cancer Day Event at AKUH Celebrates Hope, Resilience, and Support

 
<p>The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) hosted a poignant and uplifting World Cancer Day event for the cancer support group, Humsafar, on 3 February 2024. This event brought together healthcare professionals, patients, survivors, and advocates to commemorate the global initiative aimed at raising awareness and fostering a sense of community among those affected by cancer.</p><p>The event commenced with a heartfelt Tilawat by Dr Bilal Ahmed, followed by introductory remarks from Dr Zehra Fadoo, Chair Department of Oncology, and an address by Dr Asim Belgaumi, Chief Medical Officer, underscoring the importance of solidarity in the face of the formidable challenges that cancer poses.</p><p>An inspiring session of the Humsafar support group then followed, providing an intimate space to cancer survivors and advocates as they shared their personal journeys, experiences, and challenges. Khusro Mumtaz, the founder of Humsafar, facilitated the heart-warming session. This powerful segment showcased the importance of patient support groups like Humsafar: a place for cancer patients, friends, and families to connect and exchange stories of strength, resilience, and hope.</p><p>A compelling dialogue session between renowned chef and guest, Naheed Ansari, and patients/survivors shed light on the emotional and psychological aspects of living with cancer. The exchange aimed to destigmatize the disease and foster a greater understanding and empathy within the community.</p><p>To inject a spirit of camaraderie, a quiz game activity was organized, with participants divided into three teams. The teams rose to the challenge with enthusiasm as oncologists Dr Tasneem Dawood and Dr Yasmin Rashid moderated the lively session, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and mutual support.</p><p>Adding a touch of joy and festivity, a cancer survivor displayed her hidden talent by performing various songs, with the audience joining her and singing along. In this way, the event celebrated the diverse abilities and strengths that individuals bring to their fight against cancer.</p><p>The day concluded with a session for attendees to mingle over tea and refreshments, fostering a sense of community and support that will continue long after the event. The World Cancer Day celebration at AKUH successfully united individuals from all walks of life, highlighting the importance of solidarity and compassion in the fight against cancer.​
