In its unwavering commitment to upholding international standards and achieving world quality certifications, the Aga Khan University Hospital's Nutrition and Food Service Department (NFSD) has once again been awarded the prestigious ISO 22000:2018 Food Safety Management System certification, a globally accepted international standard for food safety. This milestone was attained on 26 October 2023 after a thorough assessment was conducted.

ISO 22000:2018 supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by reducing food borne diseases, ensuring sustainable consumption, and supporting better public health. Thus, it ties in with AKUH's mission to constantly strive for excellence in healthcare and in serving our community.

The assessment period for the certification featured an in-depth scrutiny of NFSD's food management system and processes, reflecting the department's dedication to ensuring the highest standards of food safety. As per the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this certification signifies an organization's ability to “control food safety hazards in order to ensure that food is safe."

AKUH's NFSD was the first hospital-based food production and service in Pakistan to be certified on food safety standards in 2009, and proudly continues to be recertified, ensuring that we only offer our patients and staff, safe and hygienic food.

This accomplishment stands as a testament to AKUH's relentless commitment to promoting optimal food safety practices. Through a stringent accountability process, the institution reaffirms its dedication to meeting our patients' nutritional needs with utmost care and attention.

Syed Shamim Raza, Director Pharmacy and NFSD, extended his heartfelt congratulations to his team, acknowledging their unwavering efforts throughout the rigorous evaluation process. This process encompassed the development of a comprehensive food safety management system, meticulous documentation review, strict compliance with Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) protocols, and adherence to ISO standards.

"I would like to thank each member of our remarkable NFSD team for the untiring work they are doing with dedication and commitment, our leadership for their guidance and support, and everyone for being part of this journey," said Mr. Shamim Raza, praising the collective effort that led to this commendable achievement.

AKUH's NFSD caters to students, faculty, staff, as well as patients and their attendants, serving approximately 13,000-15,000 meals in a day. Obtaining the ISO certification shows their relentless pursuit of quality in food services, manifested in every meal served to every patient.
